Jacket
The jacket is a waist- to hip-short part of outerwear that opens at the front. This opening can hang open or be closed with buttons, hooks or ribbon loops. Longer garments of similar shape are called coats. Jackets differ from blouses or shirts in that they are made of more robust, heavier and/or warmer fabric and are not worn directly on the skin.
The jacket has been known since the 14th century as a padded tunic or colorful leather dress. The jacket is also a traditional costume of farmers and lesser people. According to another meaning, French farmers in the Middle Ages were nicknamed Jacques, as this first name was very common at that time. The Peasants' Revolt of 1358 in France was probably also called the Jacquerie for these reasons. The name jacque is said to come from this time, later jaquette - the typical garment of the jacques.
