Dessert
The borrowed word dessert comes from the French desservir “to take away the food, to cover the table,” which means the finished main course. Dessert is therefore the course that was eaten after the table was cleared. While the main courses are mostly warm dishes, desserts are served either cold or warm. This distinction depends on the main ingredients used. Desserts are served in small portions as are the starters.
Desserts are usually associated with sweet dishes, but non-sweet dishes such as cheese platters are also common; they are more commonly called dessert. Hot dishes include, for example, flambéed desserts or desserts covered with warm dessert sauces (such as chocolate sauce), while ice cream or cheese specialties are served cold. Drinks are served to accompany dessert. A typical dessert drink can be a dessert wine itself, after which it was named.
